                        <title>EGA and ENEC deliver first aluminium produced with carbon-free nuclear energy</title>

                        <guid>https://media.ega.ae/ega-and-enec-deliver-first-aluminium-produced-with-carbon-free-nuclear-energy/</guid><pp:caseid>717890</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span><strong>United Arab Emirates, 7 August 2025: </strong>Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest ‘premium aluminium’ producer in the world, and Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) today announced the UAE’s first delivery of low-carbon aluminium using electricity generated at Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, located in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, UAE.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span>EGA is marketing this type of low-carbon aluminium under the product brand MinimAL. The metal will be supplied to CANEX Aluminum, Egypt’s leading aluminium downstream producer.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span>EGA’s new product positions the UAE as a reliable supplier of low-carbon industrial materials to global markets and expands EGA’s low-carbon metal portfolio for our local and global customers.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span>Generating the electricity required for aluminium smelting and production accounts for around 60 per cent of the global aluminium industry’s greenhouse gas emissions. ENEC’s Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant provides access to abundant clean electricity 24/7 from nuclear energy which is essential for decarbonising the UAE’s industrial sector.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span><strong>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium</strong>, said: “Global demand for low carbon aluminium is expected to triple by 2040, and EGA aims to play an important role in this growth. MinimAL is our latest low-carbon product, made possible through the UAE’s investment in nuclear power generation. We are glad to be working with ENEC to supply more low carbon aluminium to the world.”</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span><strong>His Excellency Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ENEC</strong>, said: “This milestone shows how nuclear energy is boosting national energy security and enabling the UAE’s industrial decarbonisation in parallel, reliably powering energy-intensive sectors like aluminium production with clean electricity 24/7. Through the abundant electricity generated at Barakah, we have unlocked the significant, proven and long-term benefits of nuclear energy to power the UAE’s low-carbon economy for decades to come.”</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span>CANEX Aluminum is the first customer to use EGA’s MinimAL to produce advanced products for infrastructure, solar energy, transportation, and architectural applications.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span><strong>Mutassem Daaboul, Managing Director of CANEX Aluminum</strong>, said: “At CANEX, we believe true sustainability is built into every layer of production—from the raw material to the final product. Our upcycling model already transforms waste into value-added products. Now, with MinimAL, we are taking another step forward by reducing embedded emissions at the very beginning of our process. This partnership with EGA reflects our shared commitment to responsible innovation.”</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span>The clean electricity is certified through the UAE’s Clean Energy Certification programme using International REC Standard (I-REC) protocols to ensure traceability and credibility. The power is supplied through Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) via the national grid.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span>The Barakah plant generates 40 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, which is around 25 per cent of the UAE’s electricity needs, and equivalent to the annual total power demand of Switzerland. Carbon-free electricity from Barakah avoids 22.4 million tons of carbon emissions each year, equivalent to removing 4.8 million cars from the road.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span>EGA was the first company globally to produce aluminium using solar power, with 80 thousand tonnes of CelestiAL made in 2024.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span>EGA also produces recycled aluminium, marketed under the product brand RevivAL, at its plants in the United States and Germany. In the UAE, EGA is building the UAE’s largest aluminium recycling plant at Al Taweelah. It complements the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s Performance Standard, which certifies facilities for their sustainability performance.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA’s UAE facilities source some raw materials from upstream suppliers certified to the ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody. This enables EGA to now produce a proportion of ASI Chain of Custody certified aluminium, providing customers with access to ASI Chain of Custody certified aluminium.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>All of EGA’s mining, refining and smelting facilities sites around the world are certified to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s Performance Standards, with the exception of the recently acquired Spectro Alloys.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span><strong>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium</strong>, said: "Aluminium is essential for the development of a more sustainable society. Currently, research in high temperature materials for institutions and the industries in the UAE can only be conducted abroad.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The goal is to build long-term strategic partnerships where academia and industry are proactively engaged and committed to success in collaborative and multidisciplinary advanced R&D efforts.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA expects to use the laboratory and programme for practical research into refractories, carbon-based materials, anode baking furnaces, and waste.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA’s research is expected to focus on capturing and recovering heat energy generated from the company’s industrial processes, improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.                         <guid>https://media.ega.ae/he-dr-amna-al-dahak-opened-the-15th-national-dialogue-on-climate-ambition-at-ega-to-accelerate-the-decarbonisation-of-the-aluminium-sector/</guid><pp:caseid>676106</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;"><span><strong>Dubai, </strong></span><span dir="RTL"><strong>25</strong></span><span><strong> 2024</strong>: The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has held its fifteenth session of the National Dialogue on Climate Ambition (NDCA) at Emirates Global Aluminium headquarters in Al Taweelah.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The fifteenth assembly focused on the innovative solutions that progress the decarbonisation of the aluminium sector to meet the growing global demand for this sustainable metal as the UAE is the fifth-largest aluminium producing nation in the world.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The NDCA, launched in May 2022, is a platform to define and raise sectoral climate ambition and advance all-inclusive participation in the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The NDCA’s monthly stakeholder assemblies are dedicated to engaging a specific sector, with the aim of exploring sectoral requirements, priorities, and future direction to amplify contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The session engaged stakeholders from across the aluminium value chain, including the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, leading can-makers and waste management companies, to discuss the role of aluminium in boosting the UAE’s circular economy.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>In her opening keynote speech, HE Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minster of Climate Change and Environment highlighted the potential the aluminium sector holds to move the UAE towards its Net Zero ambition. She said: “The aluminium sector is a major asset in helping the UAE achieve a low-carbon future; it is critical to many of the industries central to low-carbon development.”</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>Her Excellency added: “As a key enabler to reducing emissions in numerous sectors, we know that demand for aluminium will rise. We must find ways to meet this demand, whilst reducing the environmental impact of aluminium production.”</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span><strong>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium</strong>, said: “We are honoured to host the 15th National Dialogue for Climate Ambition session at EGA’s headquarters&nbsp;in Al Taweelah. At EGA, we recognise that producing metal essential for the development of a more sustainable society is not enough. It also matters how sustainably aluminium is produced. Many of the decarbonisation challenges we face are shared with other industries, and we must work together to address these challenges."</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>During the session, two companies signed the UAE’s Climate-Responsible Companies Pledge: Tadweer Group, and Yellow Door Energy. This takes the total number of signatories to 140. The pledge was launched in 2022 to help the UAE government engage with entities keen to make an active contribution to the nation’s climate neutrality movement and align their efforts to achieve the UAE’s common objective.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>By signing the pledge, companies commit to measuring and reporting their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a transparent manner, developing ambitious science-based plans to reduce their carbon footprint, and sharing these plans with the UAE government to contribute to achieving the national net-zero target by 2050. EGA’s Sustainability team monitor the beach throughout the nesting season, protect the nests from predators and debris, and rescue any injured or sick turtles.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Some 116 nests have been laid on the beach next to EGA’s operations since the monitoring programme began.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>This year, four turtles were found in need of care and were transferred to the Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Centre at Burj Al Arab, where they now receive expert treatment before being released back into the sea.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Before the nesting season, EGA brings together volunteers from across the company for a beach clean-up at Al Taweelah. In January, EGA employees volunteered in the clean-up and removed some 1,300 kilogrammes of waste washed up from the sea.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span><strong>Abdulnasser bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium</strong>, said: “EGA is committed to operating responsibly, including by protecting wildlife near our operations.                         <guid>https://media.ega.ae/ega-ships-bauxite-cargo-using-lng-fuelled-ship-in-world-decarbonisation-first/</guid><pp:caseid>653970</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p style="margin-left:0in;"><span><strong>United Arab Emirates, 5 August 2024: </strong>Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest ‘premium aluminium’ producer in the world, today announced the world’s first bauxite cargo shipment using a Liquefied Natural Gas-fuelled vessel.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The shipment, in a Capesize ship, is carrying bauxite mined by EGA subsidiary Guinea Alumina Corporation to a customer in China.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>LNG-fuelled ships can achieve up to 28 per cent lower greenhouse gas emissions on a tank-to-wake basis compared to vessels using traditional marine bunker fuel, according to SEA-LNG, a multi-sector industry coalition. The global shipping industry as a whole was responsible for over two per cent of the word’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The bauxite shipment is onboard the Ubuntu Empathy, an LNG dual-fuelled vessel operated by Anglo American and chartered by EGA. The vessel is one of Anglo American’s 10-strong chartered fleet of lower emission LNG dual-fuelled vessels.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Capesize vessels are amongst the largest bulk cargo carriers in the world, and are up to 300 metres long – the length of two football fields – and 50 metres wide. Capesize vessels can carry around 180 thousand tonnes of bauxite ore.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA predominantly uses Capesize vessels to ship bauxite ore from the Republic of Guinea to the company’s alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi and to third-party customers around the world. Last year, EGA exported some 14.1 million wet metric tonnes of bauxite from Guinea.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Bauxite is the ore from which aluminium is derived.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span><strong>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium</strong>, said: “Aluminium plays an essential role in decarbonisation economy-wide. It is also important how sustainably aluminium is produced, and this includes the transportation around the world of millions of tonnes of raw materials. Our approach to decarbonisation is comprehensive and extends beyond our operations to include everything from supply chain to financing. LNG-fuelled cargos are one way for us to reduce our emissions, and we are proud to pioneer this fuel for shipping bauxite. Our goal is to reach net zero by 2050, including from our supply chain, and help meet the increasing global demand for the low carbon aluminium.”</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA’s bauxite mining subsidiary GAC makes EGA one of the biggest merchant bauxite suppliers in the world. GAC began production in 2019.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA was the first aluminium producer and the first Middle East company to join global shipping and maritime sustainability initiative, the Sea Cargo Charter, in 2023.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>In 2022, EGA signed an agreement with one of its shipping partners, “K” Line to develop and implement new marine decarbonisation technologies suitable for EGA’s bulk cargo shipping routes in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean.</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[Sustainability,Economic growth]]></category>

Only a third are currently recycled, compared to over 95 per cent in leading recycling countries. More than 440 million aluminium cans currently end up in UAE landfill sites annually.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA and RECAPP collected 145 thousand used drink cans during the year.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span><strong>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer</strong> <strong>of Emirates Global Aluminium</strong>, said: “Aluminium is essential for the development of a more sustainable society. The event in Dubai focused particularly on decarbonisation and wider sustainability, with participants from as far afield as Australia, Vietnam and the United States.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA made alumina refining a new industrial activity in the UAE in 2019, with the start of production at the company’s Al Taweelah alumina refinery following an investment of some $3.3 billion in its development. The refinery converts bauxite ore into alumina, the feedstock for aluminium smelters.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Continuous improvement has seen production increase to 2.48 million tonnes of alumina in 2023, well beyond Al Taweelah alumina refinery’s initial design capacity.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, said: “Innovation and continuous improvement have been foundations of EGA’s global success for decades, including more recently in alumina refining. Industry cooperation is an important way technical advances that benefit all are made. Bringing together the world’s leading technical experts also enables us to further deepen the expertise of the UAE National talent EGA has developed for key roles in the UAE’s alumina refining industry.”</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Dr Steven Rosenberg, Director of Bauxite Residue Research at EGA and Chair of the AQW Executive Committee, said: “As a young scientist, I submitted a technical paper to the very first AQW in 1988. I am proud that we have now held the first AQW outside Australia in the UAE, sharing our technical experience from one of the world’s most modern alumina refineries, and learning from others to continuously improve.”</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA began developing UAE Nationals for key roles at Al Taweelah alumina refinery when the project was still on the drawing board. Today around 100 UAE Nationals work at the plant, from Executive-level to frontline shift supervisors.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The award for best technical paper at AQW 2024 was won by a team led by Sami Al Bastaki, a senior manager in process engineering at Al Taweelah alumina refinery.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>More than 60 technical papers were presented at AQW in total.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The University of Szeged in Hungary, which works with EGA on research to find productive uses for bauxite residue, a waste stream from alumina refining, won the award for best academic paper.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The conference featured a Net-Zero Alumina workshop which brought together a team of 55 experts from across the global alumina industry on this topic for the first time.                         <guid>https://media.ega.ae/every-can-counts-launched-in-uae-by-ega-crown-and-canpack/</guid><pp:caseid>620851</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><strong>United Arab Emirates, 15 February 2024:</strong> Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, has partnered with beverage can-makers Crown and CANPACK to launch Every Can Counts, an innovative campaign that aims to encourage consumers to recycle used aluminium drink cans, boosting the circular economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.&nbsp;</p><p>Every Can Counts is a leading global awareness programme for drink can recycling. The UAE chapter, which held its first public events during COP28, is the third non-European chapter after Brazil and the USA. The programme already operates in 21 countries, to inspire, encourage and empower people to recycle their drink cans wherever they are, with a focus on out-of-home consumption and collection. The campaign runs educational and recreational activations at festivals, beaches and other popular places.&nbsp;</p><p>UAE citizens and residents each on average consume more than 60 aluminium drink cans every year - some 660 million aluminium beverage cans in total annually. Only a third are currently recycled, compared to over 95 per cent in leading recycling countries. More than 440 million aluminium cans currently end up in UAE landfill sites annually.&nbsp;</p><p>The fate of used aluminium beverage cans is often decided by individual consumers’ choices whether to put their used can in a recycling bin.&nbsp;</p><p>Aluminium is infinitely recyclable. Recycling aluminium takes 95 per cent less energy than making new metal, and generates only a fraction of the greenhouse gas emissions. The UAE COP28 Presidency and global aluminium industry leaders set a target to reach at least 80 per cent aluminium beverage can recycling by 2030 and near 100 per cent by 2050. Recycling all used aluminium beverage cans globally would save 60 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, said:</strong> “Infinite recyclability is one of many reasons why aluminium is essential for the development of a more sustainable society. Aluminium is already one of the world’s most recycled materials, but too much of this valuable material is still thrown away. Increasing recycling requires supportive government policies and the development of infrastructure. It also depends on individuals making the right decisions every day about how to dispose of items they no longer need. Displayed at the Sustainability Entrance, the artwork depicted a young woman holding Planet Earth, symbolising the significant impact of simple actions like can recycling on environmental sustainability.&nbsp;</p><p>The programme also deployed recycling ambassadors at COP28 with QR-coded backpacks, actively promoting on-the-spot recycling and highlighting aluminium’s sustainable packaging properties.&nbsp;</p><p>Last year, EGA formed the UAE Aluminium Recycling Coalition which brings together Crown and Canpack, as well as beverage producers and waste management companies to increase the rate of aluminium recycling in the country.&nbsp;</p><p>EGA has started construction of the UAE’s largest aluminium recycling facility in Al Taweelah. The plant, which will have a capacity of 170 thousand tonnes per year.                         <guid>https://media.ega.ae/ega-first-aluminium-producer-to-join-global-shipping-and-maritime-sustainability-initiative/</guid><pp:caseid>615082</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><span><strong>United Arab Emirates, 20 December 2023 </strong>– Emirates Global Aluminium, the world's largest 'premium aluminium' producer and the biggest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, has become the first aluminium producer and the first Middle East company to join the Sea Cargo Charter.</span></p><p><span>The Sea Cargo Charter sets a global framework to assess and disclose the climate alignment of ship chartering activities to reduce the annual greenhouse gas emission of global shipping to net zero by around 2050, in line with the goals of the International Maritime Organization, the United Nations agency responsible for regulating global shipping.</span></p><p><span>EGA ships some 22 million tonnes of aluminium, bauxite and raw materials around the world each year. While the production of raw materials accounts for the bulk of EGA’s scope 3 emissions, global shipping accounts for a meaningful proportion.</span></p><p><span>The global shipping industry as a whole was responsible for two per cent of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency.</span></p><p><span><strong>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium</strong>, said: “The aluminium EGA produces plays an essential role in the development of a more sustainable society. It is also important how sustainably it is produced, and this includes shipping raw materials to our production sites and bauxite and metal to our customers worldwide. EGA has committed to reaching net zero by 2050, including from our supply chain.                         <title>EGA begins construction first-of-its-kind pilot plant to convert bauxite residue into manufactured soil</title>

                        <guid>https://media.ega.ae/ega-begins-construction-first-of-its-kind-pilot-plant-to-convert-bauxite-residue-into-manufactured-soil/</guid><pp:caseid>611465</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p style="margin-left:0in;"><span><strong>United Arab Emirates, 23 November 2023: </strong>Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, today announced the start of construction of a pilot plant to convert bauxite residue, a waste stream from alumina refining, into manufactured soil.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>The pilot plant is thought to be the first-of-its-kind in the world.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>Construction follows five years of scientific research & development by EGA and a consortium of global research partners, which led to a breakthrough in the re-use of one of the aluminium industry’s most challenging waste streams. EGA has spent the last year on detailed engineering work.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>The pilot plant will use EGA’s proprietary technology to neutralise caustic bauxite residue into an environmentally benign raw material in hours, instead of undergoing decades-long, natural processes. This Optimised Bauxite Residue is the main ingredient for the manufactured soil, which EGA calls ‘Turba’ (the Arabic word for soil).</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>The pilot plant will prove the potential to industrialise EGA’s revolutionary process and will give the company the ability to conduct large-scale trials to test plant growth using the manufactured soil. It is expected to be completed during 2024.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>Laboratory-scale trials have already shown that Turba significantly enhances plant growth while using less water and fertiliser than local sandy alternatives. The pilot plant will be capable of producing up to six tonnes per day of optimised bauxite residue.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span><strong>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium</strong>, said: “The construction of this pilot plant is an important milestone in our drive to find productive uses for bauxite residue, which has been a challenge since the dawn of our industry. Manufactured soil has great potential as a solution, as it meets an important need in the UAE. Our goal is to develop and prove multiple solutions, to ensure all bauxite residue produced in the UAE is used in the UAE, contributing to a more circular economy.”</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>Some 150 million tonnes of bauxite residue are thought to be produced worldwide every year with less than two percent put to productive use. Untreated bauxite residue is caustic and does not support plant life.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>The plant, which will be located at EGA’s site in Al Taweelah in Abu Dhabi, will cover an area of 900 square metres when complete, and will contain 230 tonnes of steel, more than two kilometres of piping, and 10 separate tanks. The heart of the plant, a specialised filtration system, was built in Finland and arrived in the UAE in June.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>The UAE has limited naturally-occurring soil, and imports significant quantities each year for greening and agricultural purposes. Soil is considered a non-renewable resource as it takes centuries to develop naturally in even the most favourable climates.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>The world’s soil naturally absorbs some 20 per cent of man-made CO<sub>2</sub> emissions every year, making soil the largest terrestrial CO<sub>2</sub> storage facility and critical for the global effort to avert the worst impacts of climate change. Soil’s CO<sub>2</sub> absorption capability is under threat globally from human-driven soil erosion.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>Early studies show that EGA’s Turba may have up to 10 times better CO<sub>2</sub> absorption properties than the UAE’s natural soil.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>EGA began production at Al Taweelah alumina refinery in 2019, making alumina refining a new industrial activity for the UAE. EGA is fully committed to finding productive uses for bauxite residue within the UAE.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>EGA’s bauxite residue team has already developed other potential novel applications for bauxite residue, including as a raw material for the steel, cement, and construction industries.</span></p><p><span>EGA has already developed re-uses for other waste streams from its industrial activities. These include spent pot lining, a by-product of aluminium smelting, which is re-used as an alternative feedstock and fuel by the UAE cement industry; carbon dust, which is also used as a fuel in cement manufacturing; and dross, which is processed to recover aluminium. The plant will process post-consumer aluminium scrap such as used window frames, as well as pre-consumer aluminium scrap from extrusion production, into low-carbon, high quality premium aluminium billets.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The new facility will supply local and global markets with low carbon metal under the product name RevivAL. Construction is expected to be complete within three years.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Most of the aluminium scrap generated in the UAE is currently exported for processing outside the country, and is lost to the national economy. Once the recycling plant is complete, EGA expects to become the largest consumer of aluminium scrap in the UAE.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Market analysts expect global demand for recycled aluminium to grow from some 27 million tonnes per year in 2022 to 57 million tonnes in 2040. Recycled aluminium is expected to account for around 60 per cent of the growth in global aluminium supply between now and 2030, and around 70 per cent of supply growth between 2030 and 2040.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Aluminium is infinitely-recyclable. Recycling aluminium requires 95 per cent less energy than making new metal, and results in a fraction of the greenhouse gas emissions of primary aluminium production.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span><strong>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium</strong>, said: “Aluminium recycling is key to our metal achieving its enormous potential to contribute to decarbonisation while improving global living standards. This makes recycling the biggest global growth opportunity for our industry, and for EGA. Our construction of a major aluminium recycling plant will provide low carbon product options for our local and global customers while contributing to the national Operation 300bn industrial growth strategy.”</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA was the first company to produce aluminium commercially using solar power, which is marketed under the product name CelestiAL, starting in 2021. Last year, EGA produced 57 thousand tonnes of CelestiAL.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>In 2023, EGA expanded its low carbon metal portfolio, combining solar and recycled aluminium to achieve even lower carbon intensity. This product is called CelestiAL-R.                         <guid>https://media.ega.ae/217-turtles-hatch-at-egas-al-taweelah-beach/</guid><pp:caseid>588413</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;"><span><strong>United Arab Emirates, 6 September 2023:</strong> Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, today announced that 217 Hawksbill turtles have hatched at the company’s Al Taweelah beach this summer nesting season.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>Hawksbill turtles are critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.&nbsp; Each year, EGA’s Sustainability team and volunteers from across the company clear the beach of washed-up rubbish throughout the nesting season, monitor visiting turtles, and protect nests.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>Some 110 nests have been laid on the beach next to EGA’s operations since the programme began in 2011, with more than 7,200 turtles successfully hatched. &nbsp;</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>EGA also works with the Jumeirah Group's Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Centre to rescue and rehabilitate injured and sick turtles, although no turtles that needed care were found this year.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>Salman Abdulla, EGA’s Executive Vice President of Sustainability and ESG, said: “Turtles were using Al Taweelah beach for nesting long before we built our plant nearby, and it is a priority for us that they can continue to do so every year. We ensure that our operations do not disturb this natural environment, and do everything we can to protect turtle nesting.                         <guid>https://media.ega.ae/egas-al-taweelah-alumina-refinery-certified-by-aluminium-stewardship-initiative-for-esg-performance/</guid><pp:caseid>584285</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><i><span>All EGA operational assets around the world are now certified to aluminium industry’s internationally recognised sustainability standard</span></i></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span><strong>United Arab Emirates, 17 August 2023: </strong>Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, today announced that its Al Taweelah alumina refinery has been certified for its environmental, social and governance performance by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>All EGA operational assets around the world are now certified to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s Performance Standard V2 (2017).</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative is a global, non-profit organisation that brings together aluminium producers, end-users such as BMW Group and Nespresso, civil society, and the public through consultation, to determine what constitutes good sustainability performance in the aluminium sector.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Al Taweelah alumina refinery has amongst the lowest greenhouse gas emissions in the alumina refining industry, due to highly efficient processes and operations.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The responsible management of bauxite residue, a by-product from the refining process, has been a key priority for Al Taweelah alumina refinery since before its construction. EGA’s Research & Development team has made a global breakthrough in the re-use of bauxite residue as a manufactured soil, and is advancing further potential uses including in novel construction materials. Finding viable re-uses for bauxite residue has been a challenge for the alumina refining industry for more than a century.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>More broadly, EGA was the first company in the world to make aluminium commercially using solar power. Generating the electricity required for aluminium smelting using fossil fuels accounts for more than half of the global aluminium industry’s CO2 emissions.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium, said: “Aluminium has an essential role to play in the development of a more sustainable society, and it also matters how sustainably aluminium is made. EGA’s Al Taweelah site was certified to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s Performance Standard in 2019, and EGA’s Jebel Ali site was certified in 2021. GAC achieved certification earlier this year.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s Performance Standard has more than 100 environmental, social and governance requirements. Certification of operations follows a rigorous independent audit of policies, practices and performance.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Sales and distribution of Aluminium Stewardship Initiative-certified metal first requires certification against the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s Chain of Custody Standard, which lays out criteria for material sourcing management and accounting systems at every step of the aluminium value chain. Based on current planned material flows from both EGA-owned assets and third-party bauxite and alumina suppliers, around half of EGA’s 2024 cast metal production could be potentially certifiable, once Chain of Custody Certification has been achieved.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Al Taweelah alumina refinery began production in 2019, after an investment in its development of some $3.3 billion. The refinery converts bauxite ore into alumina, the feedstock for aluminium smelters.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>In 2022, Al Taweelah alumina refinery produced 2.43 million tonnes of alumina, significantly exceeding its original design capacity and meeting 47 per cent of EGA’s total alumina needs.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA’s existing separate certifications for its Al Taweelah and Jebel Ali smelter and casting operations, and its new certification for Al Taweelah alumina refinery, have been combined into a single certification for all EGA operations in the UAE. Last year, EGA recruited over 220 UAE Nationals with an average age of 23 years old.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The theme of this year’s International Youth Day, "Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World", is in line with EGA's commitment to sustainable development. The EGA Youth Council has a;sp initiated a new programme to plant Neem Trees across EGA site every two months. The first section of trees was planted today by EGA’s Managing Director, Abdulla Kalban, Iman Al Qasim, Executive Vice President Human Capital, and young EGA employees.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>Iman Al Qasim, Executive Vice President of Human Capital at EGA, said: “Every time we drive along Youth Street we will be reminded again of the important place of young people at EGA, both today and as the leaders of the future. EGA uses some one million tonnes of calcined petroleum coke each year. EGA sources up to 40 per cent of its calcined petroleum coke from ADNOC, while the rest is imported. EGA has sourced calcined petroleum coke from bp since 2012.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA and bp’s intended cooperation aims to explore potential ways to reduce the carbon intensity of EGA’s total supply of calcined petroleum coke, including its production and shipping.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>The intended cooperation could lead to the development of a calcined petroleum coke blending facility in the UAE, which would support the emissions and quality optimisation of calcined petroleum coke from different suppliers. If developed, this new industrial investment in the UAE would contribute to the achievement of the country’s Operation 300bn industrial development strategy.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, said: “While our industry must achieve a step-change in greenhouse gas emissions in the coming decades, it is important that we also continue to focus on the incremental improvements that are in reach today. Australia is the world’s second largest alumina refining country and the largest alumina exporter.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Joining international research and technology providers, EGA is HILT’s first industry partner with operations entirely outside Australia. EGA’s Al Taweelah alumina refinery began production in 2019 and is the only alumina refinery in the UAE. EGA also operates aluminium smelters in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and a bauxite mine and associated export facilities in the Republic of Guinea.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA was the first aluminium producer in the Middle East to join the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), and the first to achieve a site certification to the ASI Performance Standard.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>In alumina refining, HILT CRC is focusing on decarbonising the production of steam for digestion, and calcination. The two processes account for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions from alumina refineries and are the most significant decarbonisation challenges at EGA’s Al Taweelah alumina refinery.</span></p><p><span>EGA is committed to reaching net zero by 2050 in line with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, and has a roadmap to decarbonise all its operations.</span></p><p><span>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, said: “Joining HILT CRC enables EGA to participate with the Australian alumina refining industry in finding technological solutions to the toughest decarbonisation challenges in alumina refining. The audit considered a broad range of factors both directly and indirectly related to the company’s operations, including their impact on biodiversity, human rights, transparency, community engagement, emissions and waste management.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA was the first Middle East-headquartered company to join the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, back in 2017. Some GAC bauxite is shipped to the UAE for use in EGA’s Al Taweelah alumina refinery.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>GAC operates a 690-square kilometre mining concession, located in the northwest of Guinea. Once mined, bauxite is transported to GAC’s port at Kamsar by train using shared rail infrastructure. GAC’s port has some of the largest mining equipment ever installed in Africa. This would make EGA the largest single customer on the grid.</span></p><p><span>ENEC’s Barakah plant is already the largest source of clean, zero-carbon electricity in the UAE and wider Arab World, with two of the four 1400MW units already commercially operational, the third unit due to commence commercial operations shortly and the fourth unit gearing up for operational readiness later this year. Nuclear energy is an important source of baseload electricity, meaning it generates significant volume 24/7, which is fundamental to supporting the UAE’s growing intermittent renewable sources, which generate during daylight hours. Nuclear energy generated electricity is particularly important for decarbonizing heavy industries, which need large volumes of continuous electricity to power industrial processes, like aluminium smelting.</span></p><p><span>ENEC supplies electricity to EWEC through a long-term agreement, which EWEC sells on for dispatch.</span></p><p><span>His Excellency Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director, and Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, said: “The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant provides a significant amount of EWEC’s clean electricity and will continue to deliver the majority of its emissions-free energy for decades. As the only source of carbon-free power that generates baseload, 24/7 electricity in the UAE, nuclear energy has a central role to play in securing the decarbonization of the UAE’s power sector. Key industrial players like EGA who are looking to decarbonize their operations are already benefitting greatly from the reliable and clean electricity produced at the Barakah Plant.”</span></p><p><span>Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium, said, “The UAE’s ambitious energy transition provides the largest single opportunity for decarbonisation at EGA. Alongside solar, nuclear power will be a major part of EGA’s energy mix over the decades ahead, enabling us to provide the low-carbon aluminium the world needs to make modern life possible.”</span></p><p><span>EGA became the first company in the world to produce aluminium using solar power in 2021, through an agreement with Dubai Electricity & Water Authority. EGA produced almost 39 thousand tonnes of CelestiAL last year. It also matters how sustainably aluminium is made, and we are embedding sustainability throughout our company – from focusing on decarbonisation to reporting publicly on our sustainability progress. Ensuring our cash balances at the bank also contribute to enhancing sustainability economy-wide is in line with the overall direction of EGA.”&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Citi’s sustainable deposit solution seeks to help corporate finance and treasury departments invest excess cash in deposit accounts that aim to support financing for environmental and social projects, such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, green buildings, and expanding access to affordable basic infrastructure and essential services.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Steven Buonvino, Head of Corporate and Public Sales, Treasury and Trade Solutions, EMEA Emerging Markets at Citi, said: “Sustainability is a key strategic priority for our clients and Citi’s deposit strategy is one of the innovative ways we’ve embedded our commitment in our products and services to help our clients advance their sustainability goals by offering sustainable deposit solutions in UAE. Funds in these accounts are referenced against sustainable assets on the Bank’s balance sheet. Aluminium is an essential material for everything from wind farms to lightweight electric vehicles. As the world moves to net zero greenhouse gas emissions, the International Aluminium Institute forecasts aluminium demand will increase by between 50 per cent and 80 per cent by 2050.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA was the first Middle East headquartered company to join the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, which brings together aluminium producers, end users such as Apple and Nespresso, civil society and the public through consultation, to determine what constitutes good sustainability performance in the aluminium industry.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>EGA was the first company in the region to achieve a site certification to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s Performance Standard. EGA’s sites in Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah are both now certified.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>Last year, EGA became the first company in the world to produce aluminium commercially using the power of the sun, through a partnership with Dubai Electricity & Water Authority. Electricity generation accounts for around 60 per cent of the global aluminium industry’s emissions.
