EGA partners with Ministry of Education to encourage high school students to pursue careers in science

23 December 2020, United Arab Emirates: Young professionals from Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, conducted virtual sessions with over 1,500 high-school students who have elected to pursue applied stream programmes with a focus on Engineering and Health and Safety.

The virtual sessions were held in partnership with Ministry of Education as part of its Virtual Work Placement Programme which aims to provide students from Grade 11 and 12 with career guidance and advice from professionals working in top companies in the UAE.

The sessions led by EGA engineers included discussions on aluminium production and application, leadership and development and EGA technology, and how to pursue and grow a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, EGA’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “We believe in the UAE youth’s potential to meaningfully contribute to the country’s thriving industrial sector and our aim is to encourage their study in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Our EGA engineers have hopefully motivated and guided these bright young minds to pursue important careers that will support the UAE’s growth.”

As a company operating in a heavy industry, EGA is a particularly significant employer of professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics related disciplines. EGA employs more than 1,500 professionals in these fields including 600 UAE Nationals.

In addition to its support of the Ministry of Education’s programme, young EGA engineers and professionals visit universities in person to discuss the industrial applications of students’ fields of study, under EGA’s ‘Ambassador programme’. More than 600 UAE university students participated in these sessions last year.

This year, due to the COVID-19 situation, EGA took its Ambassador programme online to support distance learning. Young EGA engineers and professionals have held almost 20 online seminars so far for more than 1,000 university students in total from the American University of Sharjah, UAE University, and the Higher Colleges of Technology to support distance learning.
