EGA marks breast cancer month with its 7th annual pink day

Interactive and engaging activities held to raising funds and awareness

United Arab Emirates, 01 November 2015: This October, Emirates Global Aluminium (“EGA”) held its seventh annual Pink Day, coincident with international Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Pink Day event, which was held at EGA Jebel Ali and EGA Al Taweelah on 27 and 29 October respectively, highlighted the importance of early detection. Employees were engaged through a series of informative and fund-raising activities that generated over AED 32,000 for two UAE-based breast cancer support organisations, Friends of Cancer Patients and Brest Friends.

“The health and safety of our employees is our utmost priority and we hold several health awareness campaigns throughout the year to ensure that our employees are empowered through information and self-checking techniques,” said Khalid Buhumaid, (Vice President, Communication & Government Relations). “Breast cancer affects many people in our local community and we feel that we have a responsibility to support this important cause and the work of breast cancer charities in the UAE.”

An integral component of Pink Day, breast health screening services were offered to female employees across the two sites. The events on both sites each featured lunch for female employees, attended by a total of 160 ladies, with a particular highlight for many being the inspiring talk given by a breast cancer survivor who shared her breast cancer journey from diagnosis to beating the disease. A photo booth added a light-hearted element and Pink Day attendees were able to explore their creative side with a pottery-making activity.

To raise funds, second-hand books and DVDs were sold at a mini book fair; and homemade bakes were offered at a cupcake stall. All EGA employees were given the opportunity to purchase tickets for a raffle draw, in the hopes of winning a range of exciting prizes that varied from lunch vouchers, through pieces of jewellery and kitchen sets to many other desirable items.
