EGA aims to recruit 50 UAE National STEM professionals at Tawdeef

United Arab Emirates, 27 January 2018 --- Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, is looking to recruit as many as 50 UAE Nationals at Tawdheef, the Abu Dhabi career fair, for roles in science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related fields – collectively known as STEM.

The positions are for experienced hires, graduate trainees, and young people to join its craft apprenticeship programmes. EGA also has openings available at Tawdheef in other disciplines.

EGA already employs over 1,540 people in STEM disciplines, including some 500 UAE Nationals.

EGA operates aluminium smelters in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai which are amongst the largest industrial sites in the country, and is currently building the UAE’s first alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi.

EGA has focused on innovation in the UAE for over 25 years, and has used its own technology in every smelter expansion since the 1990s. EGA has also recently completed retrofitting all its older production lines using its own technology.

EGA employs over 7,000 people in the UAE, including 1,200 UAE Nationals. The company is aiming for 40 per cent Emiratisation of in-focus positions, or those that can feasibly be Emiratised, by 2020.

EGA finished 2017 with 37.6 per cent Emiratisation, the company’s highest ever level. When normalised for the high number of blue collar positions in heavy industry, EGA already has the one of the highest Emirisation rates of any major company.

As a significant employer of STEM professionals, EGA recently conducted a national survey of young people’s attitudes to careers in these fields.

The survey found that 40 per cent of 18-24 year old UAE Nationals people are interested in STEM careers, far more than their parents’ generation. Some 85 per cent of young people and 87 per cent of parents see careers in STEM as more likely to contribute to national development than careers in other fields.

EGA has more than 100 graduate trainees enrolled in its 18-month graduate training programmes at any time. These trainees then go on to occupy permanent roles in the organisation.
